Former craft industry employee honoured by award

The Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development is proud to announce that an award was presented at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show (ACTS) on February 4 in memory of Heather Stone, a former employee of the department, who passed away last spring after a long and courageous battle with cancer. The creation of the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award will give tribute for her dedicated years of service to the craft industry.

Beginning February 2006, ACTS introduced the award for students participating in the Emerging Producers Showcase. The student artist recognized as "Emerging Artist of the Year" will receive recognition from Heathers memorial award. The first award in Heathers memory was presented by her family at an awards dinner on February 4. The winner was Marlene Guenther, a textiles major from Vancouver who is a student at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

Heather Stone was an active member of the ACTS Board of Directors for almost 10 years and a dedicated member of the craft community in Atlantic Canada. Many businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador have prospered based on the guidance she was able to provide.

"Heather worked tirelessly to promote Newfoundland and Labradors craft sector and was a great ambassador for the industry," said Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "Heather had tremendous rapport with clients, and she is dearly missed by both clients and the department."

The Atlantic Canada Craft Trade Show and awards ceremony is held in Halifax each February and is a cooperative effort among four Atlantic provinces. The Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, in conjunction with other Atlantic provinces, is actively involved in the organization of the annual show. This years show is scheduled for February 4-6, 2006.
