Newcomers Choir Demonstrates
Benefits of Immigration
The Association for New Canadians (ANC) amateur choir,
New Canadian Voices, today returned to the Confederation Building to
share its musical talents in celebration of the spirit of the Christmas
season. The choir, comprising newcomers to Newfoundland and Labrador
from 17 different countries, was welcomed by the Honourable Paul
Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and minister
responsible for immigration.
By forming a community choir and sharing their beautiful voices with
us, it is obvious that newcomers add to our community and enrich our
culture, said Minister Shelley. Their willingness to give of
themselves and share their creativity with us serves as a reminder that
this province can only be strengthened by the contributions made by
immigrants.
To support newcomers to the province, government is moving forward with
the development of a comprehensive immigration strategy. The strategy is
being developed through stakeholder consultation within the community
and across government departments. In September, input was also received
from over 250 delegates at the provinces inaugural immigration
symposium. Government and the broader community agree there are benefits
and opportunities that arise through increased immigrant attraction and
retention.
This government and the people of the province recognize the tremendous
social, economic and cultural contribution being made by immigrants
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, said Minister Shelley. Today we
welcomed the members of the New Canadian Voices choir to share a part of
who they are through the universal language of music. It is my hope that
they will continue to feel welcome and find their home in Newfoundland
and Labrador.
