Business, Labour and Government to Host Provincial Labour Market Symposium

Business, Labour and government prepare to welcome more than 250 invited guests and delegates to the 2006 Provincial Labour Market Symposium being held October 29-31 at the Fairmount Newfoundland Hotel in St. Johns.

The Honourable Paul Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment along with the Labour Market Sub-Committee (LMSC) of the Strategic Partnership Initiative (SPI) are pleased to host this event. The LMSC is an integral part of the Strategic Partnership Committee. The committee oversees the activities of SPI and is comprised of representatives from the Business Caucus, the Federation of Labour and government.

"Government is looking forward to these discussions and the opportunity it presents invited guests and delegates to explore the labour market outlook in our province," said Minister Shelley. "The symposium will provide valuable insights into future labour market developments, as well as assist with ongoing regional and community level deliberations."

"Business is looking at this symposium as the beginning of a series of actions for business, labour and government to act as one in addressing issues with the provincial labour market," said Denis Mahoney, Chair of the Business Caucus. "The information shared among the delegates over the next few days will be invaluable as we implement labour market strategies for the province."

"As working people, we have more than a passing interest in the labour market we have an active stake in a labour market that is healthy; that ensures all citizens have an opportunity to participate and reach their potential through healthy and safe work environments; through access to adult learning and training, and workplace training and upskilling," said Reg Anstey, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour. "Education and job training give workers protection, allowing them to better adapt to change and reduce their vulnerability to job loss and unemployment. But investment in education and training is about more than the labour market. It is an essential ingredient in human development and the ability for all citizens to more fully participate in our civil society and our democracy," said Mr. Anstey.

For key stakeholders at the provincial and regional levels, the major objective of the symposium is to increase awareness and access to local labour market information, explore related planning tools and develop strategies for human resource and labour market development.

As well, the symposium is an excellent opportunity for members of the business community, labour, community-based organizations, economic development agencies, municipalities and others with an interest in labour market development to access networking opportunities, meet subject matter experts in the field, develop new partnerships and increase collaboration.

Healthy labour market development is essential to ensure individuals and organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are ready to take advantage of the opportunities that our provincial economy holds and to meet emerging challenges.

The committee has planned a comprehensive agenda for the symposium. Participants will have the opportunity to hear more than 50 national and local experts speak to the latest trends and best practices for human resource and labour market development.
