Website promotes Newfoundland and Labrador to skilled immigrants and entrepreneurs

A new Web site, www.gov.nl.ca/hrle/immigration, is aiming to inform potential immigrants about the benefits of choosing Newfoundland and Labrador as their new home. Paul Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE), says that an online gateway is one way that Newfoundland and Labrador can be promoted to people who are considering an application to immigrate to Canada.

"We want people who are eligible to come to Canada to choose Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Shelley. "We are a welcoming society with a rich culture that offers a good quality of life and a safe environment in which to raise a family. We particularly welcome those who would like to immigrate here to start a business, who understand the global marketplace, and who have the skills to work in areas where we have a labour shortage. Our Web site, www.gov.nl.ca/hrle/immigration, is one way to get these messages out to an international audience."

"Promoting Newfoundland and Labrador as an attractive place to invest and to work will be a key component of our provincial immigration strategy," added the minister. "We listened during consultations and have designed an online presence in both official languages. This spirit of cooperation will continue as we support the efforts of our educational institutions as they recruit international students to study in our province."

The site will evolve as work on the provinces immigration strategy continues. Currently, information about Newfoundland and Labradors history, culture and political structure is provided, as well as an introduction to business opportunities, travel and real estate. The sites development was overseen by the Coordinating Committee for Newcomer Integration, while the people involved in settling and integrating immigrants into our communities provided direct input, such as the Association for New Canadians.

"This project is the result of collaboration with a broad array of stakeholders," said Bridget Foster, executive director of the Association for New Canadians. "It has achieved its goal of creating an accessible and comprehensive Web site, which will profile our province as a viable resettlement destination."

Consultations on a proposed provincial immigration strategy were held throughout the province in the fall. A report on these consultations was released in mid-December 2005 and is available online at www.gov.nl.ca/releases/2005/hrle/1216n02.htm.
