NLHC awards tender for energy efficiency training seminars

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded a $60,000 tender to Sustainable Housing and Education Consultants Inc., to deliver a series of energy efficiency seminars to homeowners and contractors throughout the province. Paul Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, and minister responsible for housing, made the announcement today.

"These seminars offer a unique opportunity for homeowners and contractors to hear about the merits of various energy-efficiency processes and materials with local professionals. This is an opportunity for them to obtain advice on options best suited to their specific needs," said Minister Shelley.

Minister Shelley explained that the EnergySmart seminars can provide energy efficiency tips and renovation ideas which can have positive long-term impacts for everyone involved. "These seminars can help save consumers money on their energy bills by showing them how to reduce their energy consumption and making their homes more comfortable," said Minister Shelley. "Of course, introducing and implementing these ideas will also help the environment by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions."

The series will also offer open houses in seven locations throughout the province. Where possible, these open houses are taking place in vacant NLHC-owned units and will showcase a variety of procedures and products such as: blower door set-up, installation of programmable thermostats, fluorescent lighting, hot water tank insulation, pipe insulation, basement insulation, low-flow shower heads, outlet and light switch gaskets, to name a few.

The EnergySmart seminars and open houses are being administered province-wide through Sustainable Housing and Education Consultants Inc. and are available between February 21 - April 4, 2006. Sustainable Housing is a certified EnerGuide for Houses service organization. Admission to all seminars and opens houses is free, refreshments are provided and everyone who attends will receive a free energy savings kit. All participants will be eligible to enter grand prize draws valued up to $5,000.
