Skate this Sunday, figure ministers

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are being encouraged to join other Canadians by skating this Sunday, February 19, to support childrens participation in recreational programs.

The Great Skate is being organized in communities across Canada in support of Canadian Tire JumpStart, a charitable program that helps low-income children and youth get involved in organized sporting and recreational activities. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador helps fund JumpStart and Canadian Tire will match all donations made at the Great Skate (up to $500,000).

"Skating is fantastic exercise and I encourage everyone to participate in The Great Skate on Sunday singles, pairs, friends and families alike," said Paul Shelley, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE). "Strap on your blades and join in at a participating skating rink or outdoors on a safe surface."

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will be participating in The Great Skate at Mile One Stadium in St. Johns between 2 - 4 p.m. this Sunday. "This is a fabulous way to encourage families to get out, get active and support a great cause," said Minister Hedderson. "This government is committed to supporting and promoting opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to participate in recreational activities. We recognize that regular participation in sport is part of a healthy lifestyle. I will certainly be lacing up for this skating party."

Government departments have been working together to encourage physical education, recreation and healthy eating among children and youth. In addition to $225,000 provided to the JumpStart program, this has included $2.4 million for the provincial wellness strategy and $1.4 million for new school gym equipment, as well as work to revise school food guidelines and on a poverty strategy.

"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador shares our passion for ensuring that all kids have the chance to play and we are thrilled to have their continued support at The Great Skate," said Larry McCaw, Canadian Tire associate dealer (Kelsey Drive). "We encourage families and kids of all ages to join us on Sunday for a fun day of skating and to help give kids in their community the chance to play an organized sport or recreational activity."

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will also be on the ice in Italy on Sunday, with Brad Gushues curling team taking on New Zealand.
