The following is being issued at the request of Chief Justice Derek Green, head of the Review Commission on Constituency Allowances and Related Matters

Head of Commission Provides Status of Review

Chief Justice Derek Green, head of the Review Commission on Constituency Allowances and Related Matters, announced today that he has advised the Premier, the Honourable Danny Williams, Q.C., and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, the Honourable Harvey Hodder, that he anticipates that his report will be completed and delivered by January 31, 2007.

Originally I had hoped that the report would be finished in the month of November 2006; however, it has now become apparent that the matters that I feel are necessary to report on are broader and more involved than first anticipated, and the research necessary to comment comprehensively on those matters is more extensive and time-consuming, Chief Justice Green said.

The review commissions mandate extends beyond examination of appropriate levels of compensation, allowances and pensions of MHAs. It also involves making recommendations respecting financial management and controls in the House of Assembly administration generally.

In short, to fulfill my mandate, it will be necessary to make recommendations respecting general institutional renewal, Chief Justice Green said. The additional time for completion of the report is necessary to complete the mandate effectively.
