Employer Sentenced in St. Johns Provincial Court

The Department of Government Services announced today that Robert Jackman, of Mount Pearl, was sentenced in Provincial Court on November 27, 2006 upon pleading guilty to six violations of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act and Regulations.  Charges were laid in September 2006 as a result of inspections carried out by an OHS Division officer at a roofing job Mr. Jackman was carrying out at a residence in Mount Pearl in September 2004.

Following the Crowns presentation of an agreed statement of facts, Mr. Jackman pled guilty as an employer to the charge of failing to comply with a stop work order, which was issued pending implementation of appropriate fall protection procedures.  Other charges related to his failure to cooperate with the officer, and his failure to provide a safe workplace for his workers.

Mr. Jackman was fined a total of $3,000 on the six charges.
