Charges Laid Resulting from Industrial Accident at Wabush Mines

The Department of Government Services announced today that Wabush Mines has been charged with alleged violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in relation to an industrial accident that occurred in November of 2004.

An employee of Wabush Mines was exposed to a shock while carrying out assigned duties. The charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch.

The company has been charged with three violations under the act which relate generally to its failure as an employer to ensure that all sources of power were removed from a machine prior to maintenance work proceeding, and to ensure that a worker was aware that there was more than one source of power to that machine.

The first appearance for the company is scheduled for December 13, 2006 at Provincial Court in Wabush.
