Homeowners urged to keep oil tanks free from ice and snow

Dianne Whalen, Minister of Government Services, is advising homeowners to ensure that snow and ice are cleared from around their domestic fuel tanks and lines to reduce the risk of spills and leaks.

"We have had a great deal of snow in recent weeks and it is important for homeowners who have oil tanks to remember to also clear snow around the tanks, valves and lines," said Minister Whalen. "Oil lines can give way under the weight of ice and snow and it is the homeowners responsibility to ensure lines are sound and to prevent spills from their oil tanks. If there is a spill, it is the home or property owners who must pay the costs associated with cleaning up the spill."

After each major snowfall, homeowners should check that lines are not buried under snow and inspect their roof for ice over their oil tanks. It is also important to do this carefully so as not to damage the tank or lines. It is in the homeowners best interest to be vigilant about clearing snow and ice around their tanks because oil spills and leaks are costly and damaging to the environment.

Homeowners can minimize their risks associated with spills by having the tank and lines regularly inspected for signs of leakage and deterioration, ensuring adequate insurance coverage is in place and contacting fuel tank suppliers about precautions.

Oil spills or leaks must be reported immediately to the 24-hour spill line at 772-2083 or 1-800-563-9089.
