Aquaculture sector in St. Barbe District to benefit from innovation program

Tom Rideout, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, today enhanced governments support of the aquaculture industry and rural Newfoundland and Labrador with an announcement of over $21,000 to assist with aquaculture initiatives in St. Barbe District.

The future of rural Newfoundland and Labrador is a top priority for government and aquaculture is a key component in ensuring its sustainability, said Minister Rideout. To that end, government continues to support the aquaculture sector in Newfoundland and Labrador through support programs aimed at assisting in its development.

Under the Aquaculture Innovation Program, Northwater Products Limited will receive $21,175 to assist in the purchase of fish counting apparatus that is incorporated into fish transportation units. This technology will enable the company to have the most favourable numbers of fish in the units during transfer procedures. This will ensure good survival and reduce associated costs.

Northwater Products Limited performs its aquaculture operations near the community of Daniels Harbour.

"I am pleased with our government's injection of funds into the development of the aquaculture operations within my district," said St. Barbe MHA Wally Young. "This innovative initiatve is yet another example of our government's commitment to cultivating the economic potential of rural Newfoundland and Labrador ."

The Aquaculture Innovation Program assists companies in evaluating, developing, and adopting new techniques and technologies that reduce production costs, improve efficiencies and increase product quality. In Budget 2006, $255,000 was allocated for this program.

In Newfoundland and Labrador , we have seen a renewed interest in our expanding aquaculture sector, said Minister Rideout. Foreign companies are continuing to invest in our province and our own traditional seafood processors are becoming increasingly involved in the aquaculture sector. Our government will continue to provide the tools that are necessary to attract new investment and to facilitate any initiatives that our own companies are pursuing within the industry.

It is our governments goal to see aquaculture gain recognition as the flagship industry that we all know it has the potential to become. We look forward to continuing to work with industry and with our federal counterparts to have this vision realized.
