Atlantic Lottery Corporation supports Halifax 2014 Commonwealth Games bid

Building on a 30-year commitment to youth and sport in Atlantic Canada, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) is proud to announce a $500,000 contribution to help bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Atlantic Canada. Proceeds from a special edition Scratch and Win SuperPack, that went on sale across the region today, will fund this important initiative.

"Support for youth and amateur athletes has been a cornerstone of ALCs community involvement since the organization was formed in 1976," said Michelle Carinci, president and CEO. "With a renewed focus across the region on fitness, wellness and healthy living, supporting the Halifax 2014 Commonwealth Games bid was a logical fit for our shareholders and the corporation."

Newfoundland and Labradors Finance Minister Loyola Sullivan acknowledged that while the games will not be held in Newfoundland and Labrador, possible spin-offs generated from hosting such a major sporting event in the region would greatly benefit athletes from this province for years to come.

"Sport has always been a part of this provinces culture and as a government, we are pleased that ALC has embarked on this fundraiser to help bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Atlantic Canada," said Minister Sullivan. "Our athletes sometimes have to travel great distances to participate in large sporting events, but hosting this games in Atlantic Canada would help put greatly needed infrastructure in place for events to take place closer to home for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

Top prizes include $50,000 and a trip to Vancouver in 2010. However, this SuperPack also contains 10 special $5,000 prizes - the lucky winners who scratch and win $5,000 will also get to make a direct impact on sport in their community. Those 10 winners will get to designate a $5,000 donation to a local sport association, which will be awarded in the winners name. A true WIN-WIN.

"Sport Newfoundland and Labrador fully supports the bid process to bring the 2014 Commonwealth Games to Atlantic Canada," said Tom Godden, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador president. "The legacy left behind after an event such as the Halifax 2014 Commonwealth Games will play an important role in supporting our athletes for many years to come. We encourage all Atlantic Canadians to support the bid process for the Commonwealth Games as such an event will provide tremendous economic and social spin-offs for our region. We look forward to Atlantic Lottery Corporation's participation and continued support of sport not only in our province, but in Atlantic Canada as well."

Halifax was selected as Canadas bid city in December 2005, and is currently competing against Glasgow, Scotland and Abuja, Nigeria to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The deadline for submission of the bid is May 9, 2007 with final section of the host city to take place on November 9, 2007. Atlantic Lottery turns 30 this year. All in all, its been a "Win-Win" for Atlantic Canada. Its been a win for players for literally 4.5 billion reasons: thats the amount ALC has awarded in prizes to winners over the past three decades. Its also been a win for Atlantic Canada because, over the past 30 years, every penny of ALCs profit - $4.7 billion since 1976 - has been returned to the region through Atlantic Canada's four provincial governments.
