Premier Thanks Ed Byrne for Public Service

The Honourable Premier Danny Williams today thanked Ed Byrne for his years of public service and wished him well as he moves on from public life.

"I know that the decision taken today by Ed was a difficult one, and Im sure that it was done after much soul searching and thoughtful consideration," said Premier Williams. "It has been a difficult time for Ed and his family, and I want them to know that we wish them all well during this time."

Ed Byrne was elected as the MHA for the District of Kilbride in 1993 and was subsequently re-elected in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He served as Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2001.

"I think it is very important for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador to remember that Ed served this province for many, many years. He dedicated much of his adult life to public service and throughout that time, he made a positive impact on the well being of this province, and in particular the constituents of Kilbride," added the Premier. "On behalf of the people, I want to thank him for that service. In particular, I want to thank him for facilitating my transition as leader of the party. I will never forget his assistance and hard work, and his support over the years."

The Premier indicated that no decision has been made regarding a by-election for the seat vacated by Mr. Byrne.
