Premier expresses his condolences at the passing of Supreme Court Justice John Mahoney

Premier Danny Williams today expressed his condolences on the passing of former Newfoundland and Labrador Cabinet minister and Supreme Court Justice, Mr. John Mahoney, Q.C.

"Justice Mahoney was a dedicated advocate for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, whose contributions will never be forgotten," said Premier Williams. "As a former member of the House of Assembly and Cabinet he served the people of his district and the whole province with passion and conviction. These traits also served him well as a Supreme Court Justice. To me personally, he was Uncle John. Not only was he a cherished uncle, but he was also a friend and adviser."

Mr. Mahoney was first elected to the House of Assembly as the member for Harbour Main district in 1966. He would serve as Attorney General and Minister of Justice during his time in public life. After leaving the legislature Mr. Mahoney became a Supreme Court Justice in 1975 and in 1982 he was appointed to the Supreme Courts appeals division.

"Serving the public is a very noble, yet challenging duty for those that choose to accept it," continued Premier Williams. "Judge Mahoney did so with confidence and compassion, and he will be sadly missed."
