Minister to speak at national family violence reception

Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, will address representatives of the federal/provincial/territorial Family Violence Prevention Working Group and Violence Prevention Initiative at their annual general meeting later today.

The group is discussing such issues as Aboriginal family violence, the justice systems response to intimate partner violence, abuse of older adults, highlights of the world conference on family violence, Canadian Public Health Associations National Violence Prevention Strategy, Privacy Act, and the UN study on violence against children.

"I am pleased that representatives from the Family Violence Prevention Working Group have chosen Newfoundland and Labrador as the location for this years annual meetings," said Minister Burke. "Recent events in our province demonstrate how critical it is that federal, provincial, and territorial representatives work together to combat violence. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to reducing violence in this province and has expanded the provincial Violence Prevention Initiative with a goal to raise awareness that violence is simply unacceptable."

The Violence Prevention Initiative, Taking Action against Violence, is a six-year comprehensive plan of action and annual investment of $1.25 million by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to increase government and community capacity to achieve, in the long-term, a reduction in violence against women, children and youth, Aboriginal women and children, seniors, persons with disabilities and others who are victims of violence.

Collaboration of federal, provincial and territorial officials has been in place since the 1980s to strengthen the justice and housing system, promote public awareness of family violence prevention and the need for public involvement, support, research, and evaluation.

Minister Burke is expected to speak at 5:30 p.m. at the Anchor Room at the Marriott Hotel in St. Johns.
