The following is being at the request of His Honour the Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador:

On behalf of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michalle Jean, Governor General of Canada, His Honour the Honourable Edward Roberts, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, will present the Governor Generals Caring Canadian Award to Mrs. Leah Gladys Daphne Richards, a resident of Change Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador. The ceremony will take place at Government House at 2:30 p.m., on Thursday, March 2.

The award is presented to individuals whose unpaid, voluntary contributions provide extraordinary help or care to people in the community. Recipients usually have served over a number of years and normally have not been previously recognized by a national or provincial honour.

The Caring Canadian Award consists of a certificate and a lapel pin. The award symbol represents Canadians who selflessly give of their time and energy to others. The maple leaf symbolizes the people of Canada and their spirit. The heart depicts the openheartedness of volunteers and caregivers. The helping hand and heart support the maple leaf. The hand is outstretched to portray boundless generosity.

The citation for the recipient follows:

Leah Gladys Daphne Richards, Change Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador

Governor Generals Caring Canadian Award

For Leah Richards, raising 10 children on her own was only a point of departure for a lifetime of service and care for others. In 1962, she started volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross Society and, since then, has held virtually every position in the Change Islands branch of the Society, including that of president for two decades. In addition to more than 40 years with the Red Cross, she has also contributed to other organizations such as the Salvation Army, the local library board, the Disaster Committee for Change Islands and her church. To people in her community who face illness or personal difficulties, Mrs. Richards brings laughter and the comfort of her presence.

Media wishing to cover the ceremony should arrive at Government House by 2:00 p.m., March 2.
