Minister invites women to express interest in Provincial Advisory Council on Status of Women

Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, is inviting women to come forward for the positions of president and board members of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women (PACSW).

"To ensure all women are aware of this opportunity and are able to consider putting their names forward, we are calling for applications and expressions of interest," said Minister Burke.

The Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women provides advice to the minister responsible and brings before government and the public, social, political, legal, cultural and economic matters relating to the status of women in Newfoundland and Labrador. The council works with equality-seeking organizations and government to advance womens equality throughout the province.

"The womens community and the PACSW have always played an important role in addressing womens issues in this province," said Minister Burke. "I want this opportunity to be open to any interested equality-seeking women who feel they can contribute to advancing women's issues."

To increase transparency and ensure that appointments are made based on merit, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador frequently uses a public recruitment process to fill senior leadership positions. Letters will also be sent to womens organizations around the province next week to seek nominations for the board. Guidelines developed with the current board members and the out-going president will inform the board selection process.

Candidates must have demonstrated leadership in advancing the status of women and have a history of working on womens equality issues. Candidates must also be committed to working within the mandate of the advisory council.

"There are hundreds of women in the province who are involved in equality-seeking work such as graduates from Memorial University of Newfoundlands Womens Studies program, immigrant and Aboriginal women, women working in industry, as well as women working in equality-seeking, grass-roots organizations," said Minister Burke. "I want to ensure that women from all walks of life are aware of the opportunity to serve on this important board and hope there will be a high level of interest."

These opportunities will be advertised in newspapers across the province this coming week.
