Premier Williams to meet with colleagues on COF Committee on Energy

As Chair of the Council of the Federation (COF) Committee on Energy, Premier Danny Williams will be meeting with his colleagues and committee members between February 3 and 6. Premier Williams will meet with Premier Klein in Calgary on February 3, Premier Handley in Yellowknife on February 4, and Premier Charest in Montreal on February 6.

"I look forward to meeting with my colleagues on the Council Committee on Energy and discussing our mandate as a committee, and a go-forward approach to dealing with the diverse energy issues facing the country," said Premier Williams. "Energy supply and demand, efficiency, climate change and regulations are just some of the many issues facing each province and territory, and indeed the country as a whole. I am sure these and many other topics will provide for interesting discussion, as I meet with the premiers to discuss priorities and strategies so that we are in a position to report back to our colleagues at this summers COF meeting."

Appointed Chair of the new Council Committee on Energy by his fellow premiers during the August 11, 2005 Council of the Federation meeting in Banff, Premier Williams has solicited an inventory of energy issues, priorities and concerns from each province and territory. As a follow up, Premier Williams will be meeting with his fellow committee members as he embarks upon a more comprehensive consultation process.

"The Energy Committee was established to coordinate both the challenges and the opportunities facing all jurisdictions across the country," added Premier Williams. "By adopting a coordinated and cohesive approach, we will be much better prepared to deal with the challenges in a strategic way and we will be equally prepared to embrace and capitalize on the opportunities."

The Council of the Federation was created by Canadas premiers as a way to ensure they could work together and foster a leadership role in revitalizing the Canadian federation and build a more constructive and cooperative federal system. "Meetings between Canadian premiers such as these," continued Premier Williams "are a sign that the Council of the Federation is an effective organization and that all premiers are willing to work together on issues of concern to their respective provinces."
