Island Caribou Hunters Encouraged to Take Part in Health Monitoring Program The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, today provided an update on the caribou health monitoring program and encouraged future successful caribou hunters to participate in the program. "To date, my department has received 40 completed sample packages and correspondence from another 20 caribou hunters providing information on caribou health," said the minister. "Hunter participation is very important to this program and there is still time to get involved. I also extend thanks to those hunters who have already submitted samples." Information from the samples will be used to assess body condition of hunted caribou and will help wildlife officials to better understand the causes of the current caribou population decline. The Department of Environment and Conservation is asking successful hunters to submit samples from caribou killed during the 2006 big game hunt on the island portion of the province. Information about the program is available on the government website //www.env.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/caribouhealth.Any resident hunter whose completed sample package is received by the Department of Environment and Conservation in Corner Brook before 4:00 p.m. January 15, 2007, will have their name entered for a prize draw.
