Minister reminds hunters
of Sunday hunting regulations
Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment
and Conservation, today reminded hunters that the period for Sunday
hunting has not yet commenced in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Consistent with governments announcement in February 2006, the hunting
of game on Sunday begins November 5, 2006, said Minister Jackman.
Until then, the hunting of any game with a firearm on a Sunday is
strictly prohibited in all regions of the province.
Beginning November 5, 2006 Sunday hunting is permitted up until the
general closure of big game seasons for moose or caribou in each of the
three Sunday hunting regions of the province. These regions are divided
generally as the Eastern Zone, Western Zone, and Labrador. These regions
are outlined in detail on page 17 of the Hunting and Trapping Guide
available at various government offices, including the Department of
Natural Resources and Wildlife offices. The guide is also available
online at
//www.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/hnttrapfish/index.htm. Hunters who
possess a valid hunting licence may hunt game on a Sunday with a firearm
up until the general closure for big game hunting in each zone or the
close of the season for the species being hunted, whichever comes first.
By allowing Sunday hunting in this manner, we feel we are striking an
appropriate balance for all those who want to enjoy the outdoors
including hikers and berry pickers, noted the minister. A full
evaluation of the Sunday hunting initiative will be undertaken at the
close of this years hunting season to determine if any adjustments are
required.
Minister Jackman reminded hunters that the discharge of any firearm
within 300 metres of a dwelling is strictly prohibited. Our officials
have received several inquiries concerning the discharge of firearms
near cabins and houses throughout the province. I wish to stress to all
hunters the need to be vigilante and aware of their surroundings. Cabins
and houses are often built in areas where traditional hunting may occur.
If in doubt, hunters should refrain from hunting and contact their
nearest Wildlife office for clarification.
