Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Clyde Jackman has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

(1) Crown District 17 (Castor River) Forestry Plan Amendment             (Reg. 1266)
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources

The proponent proposes to construct 1.8 kilometres of Class 2 primary forest access road, and harvest approximately 11,332 cubic metres of merchantable softwood in a 168 hectare area approximately three kilometres east of the community of Castor River South, on the Northern Peninsula.  This area falls outside the current District 17 Five-Year Operating Plan.  The operation will be an integrated sawlog/pulpwood operation, utilizing mechanical harvesters and forwarders. The undertaking was registered on June 12, 2006; Public comments are due by July 19, 2006; and, the minister's decision is due by July 27, 2006.

(2) Juniper Stump, Makinsons Scrap Yard                                                (Reg. 1267)
Proponent: J. and W. Metal Salvage and Recycling

The proponent proposes to operate an auto and metal recycling processing yard in the community of Makinsons, Conception Bay.  The site is located on the north side of Country Path Road bound by a range of hills and covered with trees.  Construction will consist of clearing and levelling; a driveway and gate will be constructed; a 20 metre weigh scale will be installed; and a 10 metre by 10 metre garage will be built.  Construction is expected to last approximately two months.  The yard will receive scrap metal of all types, including light duty and heavy equipment.  The undertaking was registered on June 12, 2006; Public comments are due by July 19, 2006; and, the minister's decision is due by July 27, 2006.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
