Public consultations scheduled for new Sustainable Development Act

Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, today announced that government will undertake public consultations in 10 locations across the province to seek input on a provincial Sustainable Development Act. Minister Jackman released a discussion document and schedule of public consultations.

"Our government believes the development of our rich abundance of renewable and non-renewable sources must proceed in a planned and sustainable manner to provide a legacy of benefits to present and future generations," said Minister Jackman. "A Sustainable Development Act will ensure sensitive eco-systems, cultural heritage and economic needs are given appropriate and balanced consideration in resource development planning."

Minister Jackman said government intends to introduce a Sustainable Development Act in the fall of 2006. The first step in developing new legislation is public consultations on a proposed legislative framework.

"The consultations for the new Sustainable Development Act further governments Blueprint commitment to set a legislative and policy framework in sustainable development" said the minister. "I look forward to listening to and engaging citizens and community groups throughout the province as we move forward with this important initiative."
