Coyote information now available online

Information about coyotes in insular Newfoundland is now available on the government web site under the Department of Environment and Conservation. Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation said the information includes current knowledge and management of the provinces newest predator.

"The document provides a brief synopsis of what is currently known as it relates to coyotes in insular Newfoundland," said Minister Jackman. "It provides detailed information of ongoing research activities and preliminary findings."

The emigration of coyotes to Newfoundland has been described as the most significant ecological event to occur on the island since the introduction of moose over 100 years ago. At this time very little is known about the coyote in our province. Wildlife research and management officials have documented the expansion of coyotes in insular Newfoundland and are using carcasses collected primarily by trappers to investigate the appearance, diet, age, structure and reproductive rates of coyotes.

"We have a responsibility to keep the public informed about coyotes and wildlife management, and this government is committed to responsible and sustainable management of all our wildlife," said the minister. He also noted that wildlife officials are investigating potential ecological implications of an additional predator on the ecosystem of insular Newfoundland. These efforts include radio collaring and tracking of both the coyote and caribou.

The minister added that the wildlife division welcomes input or suggestions from the public that may assist in future examination and management activities as it relates to coyote research and management.
