Homeowners reminded to have their storage oil tank registered

Clyde Jackman, Minister of Environment and Conservation, is reminding owners of heating oil storage tanks of the requirement to have their storage tanks registered.

"Effective March 31, 2007, all homeowners must have their oil storage tanks systems registered. Fuel delivered to any unregistered storage tank after March 31, 2007 will be illegal," said Minister Jackman.

There are a limited number of individuals who are licensed by the Department of Environment and Conservation to inspect tanks and to conduct registration of tanks. A registered tank will have a brass tag riveted on to its vent pipe and the owner will be provided with a certificate of registration.

"From December to March, its difficult to install an outside tank or alter an existing one. The summer is near and now is the time to act and ensure your tank is registered before the deadline," Minister Jackman said. "We must all share the responsibility to ensure that our environment is protected now and for future generations."
