Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Clyde Jackman has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

(1) Belleoram Crushed Rock Export Quarry                             (Reg. 1247)
Proponent: Continental Stone Ltd.

The proponent proposes to develop a crushed granite rock quarry on a site approximately 900 hectares in size located to the north of Belleoram in Belle Bay to supply raw material to international markets. The granite will be quarried and crushed on site and loaded onto ships via a conveyor belt and shipped to market. It is estimated that 2,000,000 tonnes of aggregate will be shipped in the first year of operation. Development will include road construction, a marine wharf, core sampling crusher and associated equipment setup, removal of overburden, drilling, blasting and crushing for transport by bulk carrier to market. The undertaking was registered on April 5, 2006; public comments are due by May 15, 2006; and, the minister's decision is due by May 20, 2006.

(2) Buchans Mink Farm                                       (Reg. 1248)
Proponent: Buchans Fur Company Ltd.

The proponent proposes to construct and operate a 200 acre mink farm to the northeast of Buchans, in central Newfoundland. The operation plans to begin with 500 breeding females and expand over the following two to three years to 1,500 female breeders. The undertaking will consist of mink sheds, storage sheds, temporary manure storage, access road and perimeter fencing on 10 acres, with additional land developed as required for manure spreading. Construction is planned to commence in July with arrival of initial breeding stock in April 2007. The undertaking was registered on April 5, 2006; public comments are due by May 15, 2006; and, the minister's decision is due by May 20, 2006.

(3) Rocky Harbour Eastern Arm Pond Remote Cottage ATV Trail                     (Reg. 1249)
Proponent: Justin Watts

The proponent proposes to construct an all terrain vehicle (ATV) trail to a remote cottage on the western side of Eastern Arm Pond, near Rocky Harbour, in western Newfoundland. The trail would begin from an existing trail, and be approximately 900 metres long by 1.5 metres wide. Construction of the trail will be with hand tools and is planned for the fall of 2006. The undertaking was registered on April 7, 2006; public comments are due by May 15, 2006; and, the minister's decision is due by May 22, 2006.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

South Brook (Pasadena) Watercourse Channel Stabilization                   (Reg. 1238)
Proponent: Town of Pasadena
