NOTE TO EDITORS: Provincial and territorial ministers of education meet in St. Johns

The 90th meeting of the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) will take place in St. Johns Tuesday, September 26th at the Fairmont Hotel.

Joan Burke, Minister of Education of Newfoundland and Labrador and chair of the CMEC said the ministers will discuss, among other things, the CMEC action plan on literacy and the Aboriginal education action plan.

"Education is a high priority for our government, as evidenced in the extra $100 million allocated for education in this years budget," said Minister Burke. "As such, it is a very exciting time for the province to hold the chair of CMEC. We have an excellent opportunity to play a key role in decisions which will have long-ranging effects, not just for the province, but for Canada as a whole."

Media are invited to shoot video and photographs as the ministers gather for the meeting at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday morning. A media availability will be held when the meeting concludes at approximately 4:30 p.m.

CMEC is an intergovernmental body composed of the ministers responsible for elementary-secondary and advanced education from the provinces and territories. Through CMEC, ministers share information and undertake projects in areas of mutual interest and concern.
