NLIS 1 September 6, 2005 (Education) School maintenance projects happening province-wide Education Minister Joan Burke said today that as a result of funding allocated in Budget 2006, K-12 school maintenance, renovation, and extension projects are well underway throughout the province. "This government�s commitment to improve the learning environments of our students is unprecedented," said Minister Burke. "We are making significant inroads towards improving the infrastructure of our schools and are determined to provide safe, secure places for students and teachers." Thirty-seven million dollars has been allocated for school infrastructure needs in Budget 2006, including new school construction, some of which has already been announced such as Baie Verte and Torbay. Last year, government introduced a program of major maintenance for school buildings, including repairs or replacement of roofs, windows and siding. The program continues this year with more than 150 projects now at various stages of completion. "Government is spending an additional $100 million in education this year, with a focus on healthy and safe learning environments, as well as the other corner stones of our education system, such as resources, teachers and advanced technology. As a result, we are experiencing an extremely exciting and productive period in every school district in the province, with new opportunities for our students and many infrastructure projects in full swing," said Minister Burke.
