Paradise Elementary gets a facelift

Paradise Elementary will soon be a little bigger, thanks to a $1.4 million extension announced today by Education Minister Joan Burke.

"The Town of Paradise is growing rapidly and Paradise Elementary is seeing results of that growth," said Minister Burke. "This extension will accommodate the increasing number of families moving to the area. We are pleased to make this commitment to the parents, students and teachers of Paradise Elementary and know that once complete, this larger school will better serve the educational needs of the area."

The tender for the extension will be issued in August and the project should be completed in the spring of next year. The extension will include six new classrooms and additional washrooms to accommodate the growing school community. The board will be completing some interior renovations in the meantime to create two new learning spaces.

Beth Marshall, MHA for the District of Topsail, said, "I am extremely pleased that the Department of Education has recognized the need to accommodate student growth in the Paradise area. It also indicates that our government is cognizant of the need to improve school facilities for our children and again demonstrates that education is a major priority of this government."

Dianne Whalen, MHA for Conception Bay East and Bay Island, said, "This is a very welcome addition and will greatly enhance Paradise Elementary. I am pleased that the Eastern School District and the Department of Education recognized the importance of this project and are moving ahead with construction of additional classrooms."

Student enrolment is expected to increase by approximately 20 per cent over the next three years at this school.

Dr. Darin King, CEO, Eastern School District acknowledged the support and cooperation of the Board of Trustees and the Paradise Elementary School Council, and thanked government for their commitment to making the project a reality.

"Government is investing more than $37 million this year in school construction and renovation projects. It is an important investment for teachers and students alike. This extension to Paradise Elementary will ensure the school is able to provide a safe and comfortable teaching and learning experience for everyone," said Minister Burke.
