Newfoundland and Labrador well represented at
National Stakeholder Summit on Postsecondary Education and Skills

Premier Danny Williams and Joan Burke, Minister of Education will attend a national stakeholder summit on postsecondary education and skills in Ottawa on February 24. The premier and minister have invited a delegation of 19 provincial representatives of the postsecondary education sector in Newfoundland and Labrador to bring forward issues of importance in this province.

The Summit will be co-hosted by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Quebec Premier Jean Charest, on behalf of the Council of the Federation. The theme of the Summit is Competing for Tomorrow and will bring together a broad cross-section of stakeholders, including student, college, university, special interest groups, business and labour representatives, to examine key issues and challenges they are facing in postsecondary education and skills training.

"This Summit is part of an initiative of the Council of the Federation to develop a pan-Canadian strategy for postsecondary education and skills," said Premier Williams. "A focus on and investment in our postsecondary system and training programs is key to ensuring our province is competitive both here in Canada and globally. This event will provide premiers and leaders with an excellent opportunity to hear from those on the front-lines of the education, business and labour sectors. There are both challenges and opportunities before us, and this format will facilitate an open dialogue and sharing of ideas which will be critical to our success as we move forward."

Minister Burke met this week with the stakeholders from this province who will be attending the Ottawa summit. "We have gathered an impressive group of people to speak to challenges specific to our province and I was very encouraged by what I heard during our meeting," said Minister Burke. "Our delegation is insightful and well informed on the postsecondary education and labour market challenges facing the province. I believe Newfoundland and Labrador will be well represented at the Summit."

Stakeholders will share perspectives, identify challenges and key strategic priorities and determine how best to move those priorities forward. "Postsecondary education and skills training is a priority for our province right now," added Premier Williams. "I look forward to hearing the views and expertise of stakeholders from across the country and working with my colleagues on the Council of the Federation to ensure our postsecondary system is well positioned to help our province prosper."
