Minister awards contract for
completion of final stages of Bifurcation Road
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, Bob Ridgley, MHA for St. Johns North, and Andy Wells, Mayor of the City
of St. Johns, today announced that Pyramid Construction Limited has been
awarded a contract to complete the final stages of the Bifurcation Road, linking
Kenmount Road to the Outer Ring Road, in the City of St. Johns. Funding for
this work is made available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement
Program.
Pyramid Construction Limited, St. Johns, has been awarded a contract valued at
$2,386,636 to complete grading and paving of the Bifurcation Road Interchange
with Kenmount Road. Associated work for the connection of Kenmount Road to the
Bifurcation Road will also be completed.
Minister Rideout said, One of the highlights of the 2004-05 Provincial Roads
Improvement Program was a commitment from government to begin construction of
the Bifurcation Road. Great strides have been taken over the past two
construction seasons toward its completion. To that end, I am extremely pleased
that this contract has been awarded. When this work is complete, the Bifurcation
Road will be a reality for travelers in and around St. Johns.
This road will be instrumental in reducing traffic volumes along Kenmount Road,
and will provide quick access to the Outer Ring Road from this area, continued
Minister Rideout. Weather permitting, we hope that this road will be open to
traffic by the end of the year.
I am quite delighted to see that the contract for the completion of this
important piece of road has now been awarded, said Mr. Ridgley. Linking
Kenmount Road to the Outer Ring Road will greatly improve the flow of traffic
within the city and in the Kenmount Road area in particular. This is indeed a
great infrastructure investment for the City of St. Johns.
I am extremely pleased that government has made the completion of the
Bifurcation Road a top priority, said Mayor Wells. This is a major piece of
infrastructure, and will go a long way toward facilitating travel throughout the
city. I, along with the residents of St. Johns, look forward to the completion
and opening of this road, and its associated benefits.
Government has undertaken the largest roads program in decades, valued at $48.7
million, including carryovers from last year, said Minister Rideout. This
represents an increase of $18.7 million over the 2004-05 Provincial Roads
Improvement Program and is indicative of governments ongoing commitment to
transportation infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
