Minister addresses reports on
Labrador transportation
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, today addressed the release of reports on Labrador transportation issues.
The reports are studies on the Labrador Marine service, the freight rates on
Labrador Marine and regional airports on the southern coast of Labrador.
Minister Rideout said, The record of the current government for releasing
reports in a timely manner clearly stands out over that of the previous
administration. I anticipate it will continue to do so. In fact, the report
regarding regional airports on the south coast of Labrador was commissioned by
the previous administration.
The results of the study conducted by the Public Policy Committee relating to
the short-term configuration of the Labrador Marine service have already been
released publicly. The remaining reports, including those relating to the
long-term configuration of the Labrador Marine service and the tariff rate
review, are currently under consideration by government.
Minister Rideout said, We are exercising due diligence in our review of the
reports. They must be analyzed by our officials who are the experts in the area
of providing transportation services to the public.
In some cases reports have to be discussed with colleagues in Cabinet and Caucus
who provide input on the needs of the public and their constituents. For Cabinet
review in particular, there is an extensive process of analysis that must take
place.
Summer is a difficult time for carrying out the extensive reviews that reports
on such important topics merit, said the minister. However, these reports will
be released when government has carried out the required due diligence and they
have been appropriately reviewed. It would be irresponsible of government to do
otherwise.
