Minister announces Labrador West district to receive crushed gravel

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced that Labrador West district will receive a substantial amount of crushed gravel under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Minister Rideout said, This years roads program is valued at $48.7 million after two significant increases from $33.7 million. This includes $3.7 million in carryovers from the 2005 construction season. This will go a long way toward addressing issues of concern with the provinces roads infrastructure.

I am pleased to announce that Labrador West district will receive $500,000 for the supply and application of maintenance Grade III crushed gravel on the Trans Labrador Highway from Ashaunipi River Bridge toward Miron River Bridge.

This years Provincial Roads Improvement Program is the largest the province has had in a number of years. Minister Rideout said, Our government recognizes the importance of improving our transportation infrastructure. In addition, road work generates important employment opportunities in both rural and urban areas of the province.

I am confident that the road work which has been undertaken by our government will go a long way toward addressing the neglect of the provinces roads that has taken place in previous years. An improved roads network will provide a safer environment for residents and visitors alike, while providing an improved quality of life for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, and enhancing opportunities to attract tourists.
