Road improvements announced for Grand Bank, Cartwright � L�Anse au Clair,
Carbonear � Harbour Grace and Burgeo � LaPoile Districts

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road projects for Grand Bank, Cartwright � L�Anse au Clair, Carbonear � Harbour Grace and Burgeo � LaPoile districts under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

�The Provincial Roads Improvement Program is currently valued at $48.7 million, after two significant increases from the initial allocation of $33.7 million in Budget 2005,� said the minister.  �This program is designed to address the most pressing issues that currently face transportation infrastructure in Newfoundland and Labrador.

�To that end, I am pleased to announce that road work to the sum of $760,000 has been allocated for road improvements in the Grand Bank, Cartwright � L�Anse au Clair, Carbonear � Harbour Grace and Burgeo � LaPoile Districts.�

In Grand Bank District, $500,000 has been allocated to resurface a section of Route 210 between Marystown and Grand Bank and a section of Route 220 between Epworth and St. Lawrence.

In Cartwright � L�Anse au Clair, government will replace the wooden deck at Forteau Brook Bridge, with $100,000 being allocated for this project.

Government will spend $60,000 in Burgeo � LaPoile District, and this funding has been allocated to waterproof and repair the deck of Grand Bay West Bridge.

In Carbonear � Harbour Grace, the existing culvert at Callaways Brook near Thickett�s Road will be replaced.  This work is anticipated to cost $50,000.  In addition, a culvert near Wagner�s Nursery on Route 70 will also be replaced, and $50,000 has been allocated for this project.

�Our government has undertaken one of the largest roads programs in years, in order to address as many of the province�s roads as possible,� said Minister Rideout. �We recognize the benefits that are associated with developing a solid transportation infrastructure, including employment opportunities, a stronger economy and a higher quality driving experience.

�Our government has committed to maximizing these benefits to the best of our ability, and this has been our primary motivation for making such a large investment into our roads program.  We are confident that when this roadwork is complete, the overall quality of the infrastructure throughout these districts will be greatly enhanced.�
