Road work announced for Placentia & St. Marys

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced road and bridge projects for the Placentia & St. Marys District under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Minister Rideout said, Our government is committed to the revitalization of rural areas of our province. We believe a solid transportation infrastructure will result in benefits for road users and the industries that depend on them.  Our government is moving forward with our plans to develop a better quality roads infrastructure. Such is the scope of the planned road work for the Placentia & St. Marys District.

Planned work for the district includes:

  • $440,000 for resurfacing of Route 90 from Riverhead to St. Marys;

  • $300,000 for rehabilitation of five stream crossings on Route 100 between St. Brides and Branch;

  • $160,000 to resurface Jerseyside Hill, Route 100;

  • $50,000 for repairs to the Sir Ambrose Shea Lift Bridge in Placentia;

  • $50,000 to replace damage plates, install concrete collars and stabilize the slope at St. Shotts River.

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program, initially valued at $33.7 million, has twice been increased over the recent months and now totals $48.7 million. This includes $3.7 million in carryovers from last year, said Minister Rideout.

Our government recognizes the need for a reliable roads infrastructure for the people, economy and communities of the province. Our government takes the responsibility of roads maintenance very seriously and the initial and increased funding allocated in Budget 2005 for the Provincial Roads Improvement Program is indicative of our commitment to our transportation infrastructure.
