Lake
Melville District to benefit from provincial roads program

Transportation and Works, and John Hickey, Parliamentary Secretary for
Labrador Affairs and MHA for
Lake
Melville
, today announced road projects for the Lake Melville District. Funding for
these projects is made available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads
Improvement Program.
Minister Rideout said,
�Our government recognizes the importance of providing safe and reliable
transportation for the residents of
Labrador
. To that end, I am pleased to
announce $1.3 million in new funding for road projects in the Lake Melville
District as part of this year�s Provincial Roads Improvement Program.�
Planned projects for the
district include herbicide treatment on Route 520,
Northwest River Road
. Fifty thousand dollars has been allocated for this project.
In addition, $50,000 has been carried over from last year for
ditching and culvert replacement on Route 520.
This work has already been completed.
Nine hundred and fifty thousand dollars has been allocated for the
supply and application of maintenance-grade
III
road gravel, from
Goose
Bay
to Edward�s River. Furthermore,
$300,000 has been allocated for brush clearing in the Pope�s Hill area.
�This year�s provincial
budget allocated significant monies toward the upgrading of the
transportation network in our province.
This includes the continuation of a $45 million allocation plus $3.7
million in carryovers for the Provincial Roads Improvement Program.
This demonstrates government�s ongoing commitment to rehabilitating
our provincial roads infrastructure,� said the minister.
�One point three million dollars is a
significant investment in road infrastructure in my district of
Lake Melville,� said Mr. Hickey. �The
announced improvements will help to make travel in the area safer and more
enjoyable for all road users. Over
the past two years, our government has shown its commitment to the people of
Labrador
through a number of major initiatives and today�s transportation funding
announcement is a further example of this commitment.�
�This project represents
a major investment in Lake Melville District,� said the minister.
�The development of
Labrador
is an important part of our government�s plan to revitalize our economy in
a way that will generate revenue and create employment opportunities.�
