Lake Melville District to benefit from provincial roads program

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, and John Hickey, Parliamentary Secretary for Labrador Affairs and MHA for Lake Melville , today announced road projects for the Lake Melville District. Funding for these projects is made available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Minister Rideout said, Our government recognizes the importance of providing safe and reliable transportation for the residents of Labrador .  To that end, I am pleased to announce $1.3 million in new funding for road projects in the Lake Melville District as part of this years Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Planned projects for the district include herbicide treatment on Route 520, Northwest River Road . Fifty thousand dollars has been allocated for this project.  In addition, $50,000 has been carried over from last year for ditching and culvert replacement on Route 520.  This work has already been completed.  Nine hundred and fifty thousand dollars has been allocated for the supply and application of maintenance-grade III road gravel, from Goose Bay to Edwards River.  Furthermore, $300,000 has been allocated for brush clearing in the Popes Hill area.

This years provincial budget allocated significant monies toward the upgrading of the transportation network in our province.  This includes the continuation of a $45 million allocation plus $3.7 million in carryovers for the Provincial Roads Improvement Program.  This demonstrates governments ongoing commitment to rehabilitating our provincial roads infrastructure, said the minister.

One point three million dollars is a significant investment in road infrastructure in my district of Lake Melville, said Mr. Hickey.  The announced improvements will help to make travel in the area safer and more enjoyable for all road users.  Over the past two years, our government has shown its commitment to the people of Labrador through a number of major initiatives and todays transportation funding announcement is a further example of this commitment.

This project represents a major investment in Lake Melville District, said the minister.  The development of Labrador is an important part of our governments plan to revitalize our economy in a way that will generate revenue and create employment opportunities.
