Road improvements announced for
St. George�s - Stephenville East District
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, and Joan Burke, MHA for St. George�s - Stephenville East, and Minister of
Human Resources, Labour, and Employment, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland
and Labrador Housing and the Status of Women, today announced road projects for
the district under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.
Minister Rideout said, �In Budget 2005, government allocated significant monies
to the provincial road network. This included a Provincial Roads Improvement
Program valued at $45 million this year, plus $3.7 million in carryover work
from last year. I am pleased to announce an allocation of over $2.0 million in
new funding for road work in the St. George�s-Stephenville East District.�
Planned work for the district includes:
- $180,000 to upgrade and pave Steel Mountain
Road;
- $650,000 to upgrade and pave the old
Trans-Canada Highway at Tompkins with realignment;
- $40,000 to repair the washout in Codroy;
- $150,000 to upgrade and pave to turn around
in Codroy;
- $100,000 to resurface the road to the fish
plant in Codroy;
- $50,000 to repair the road shoulders in
Stephenville Crossing;
- $150,000 to repair approaches to Crabbes
River Bridge;
- $200,000 to upgrade the intersection to
Cormiers Road, Doyles;
- $10,000 for supply and application of Class
A road gravel to Ted White�s Road, Coal Brook;
- $500,000 for paving in St. George�s.
MHA Joan Burke said, �I am very pleased to see
these investments being made in the District of St. George's - Stephenville
East. This work will mean significant infrastructure improvements for various
areas of the district, and will benefit not only the residents who use these
roads every day, but our local economy and future development.�
Minister Rideout said, �Our government recognizes the benefits for provincial
road users of investing in the maintenance of our highway infrastructure. The
substantial allocation in Budget 2005 for our roads program demonstrates our
government�s commitment to rehabilitating our roads infrastructure. It is also
indicative of government�s plan to revitalize the economy and create long-term
benefits for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.�
