Road work announced for Conception
Bay East and Bell Island
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, and Dianne Whalen, Minister of Government Services and MHA for Conception
Bay East and Bell Island, today announced road projects for the district. The
funding for these projects is made available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads
Improvement Program.
Minister Rideout said, Our government recognizes the benefits that are
associated with a solid road infrastructure and we have an ongoing commitment to
maximize these benefits to the best of our ability. In Budget 2005, government
allocated significant monies to the provincial road network, with the attainment
of this goal in mind. The Provincial Roads Improvement Program is valued at
$38.7 million, including $3.7 million in carryover work from last year.
We continue to make improvements to our transportation infrastructure. To that
end, I am pleased to announce planned road projects for the district of
Conception Bay East and Bell Island, said the minister.
In the Conception Bay East and Bell Island District, government plans to upgrade
and pave a section of Indian Meal Line at Portugal Cove. This work is
anticipated to cost $470,000. ONeills Hill at Bell Island will also be
resurfaced, with $120,000 allocated for this project. Furthermore, $60,000 has
been allocated for the resurfacing of various roads in the district.
I am very pleased with the announcement of this road work in my district of
Conception Bay East and Bell Island, said Minister Whalen. These improvements,
which will be carried out under the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, will
benefit residents of my district as well as visitors to this beautiful area.
This $650,000 investment will ensure that the public will be safe while
traveling on our roads.
Minister Rideout said, The benefits of road projects are many, including
employment opportunities, stimulating local economies and making roads safer.
Our government is cognizant of the importance of the roads program to road users
and local economies. We will continue to invest in the Provincial Roads
Improvement Program as long as it is fiscally possible to do so.
