Road projects announced for The
Straits and White Bay North District
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, and Trevor Taylor, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for The
Straits and White Bay North, today announced road projects for the district
valued at $2 million in new funding. Funding for these projects is made
available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.
Minister Rideout said, "The Provincial Roads Improvement Program provides
funding for upgrading and improving the provincial highway network. Budget 2005
allocated significant monies for our roads infrastructure. This year, the
program is valued at $38.7 million, including $3.7 million in carryover work
from last year. This demonstrates government's ongoing commitment to providing
safe, reliable transportation links for road users in our province."
Road work planned for the district includes paving a section of Route 430, from
St. Anthony Bight Intersection toward the intersection at L'Anse aux Meadows.
This work is anticipated to cost $900,000. In addition, Conche Road will be
upgraded, with $800,000 funding allocated for this project. Local roads in
Nameless Cove and Green Island Brook will also see upgrades and paving, with
work anticipated to cost $300,000. Furthermore, $48,000 funding will be carried
over from last year, which will be used for the replacement of Upper Brook
Bridge.
"This is a significant investment in the infrastructure in the district and I'm
pleased to see government moving forward with these priority projects in this
fiscal year," Minister Taylor said. "The upgrades are important for residents,
local businesses and the continued growth of the economy on the Northern
Peninsula, as well as providing needed and worthwhile employment in the area."
Minister Rideout said that government recognizes the need of an improved highway
infrastructure for roads users and local businesses.
"Over the past 18 months, significant investments have been made in business and
community economic development with the goal of boosting rural economic
development and helping the province become more competitive," said the
minister. "As we guide Newfoundland and Labrador toward fiscal and economic
stability, we continue to make strategic investments into the critical services
the public depends on."
