MV Apollo getting a new engine
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, today announced that the MV Apollo will be getting a new engine. The
Apollo provides ferry service between the communities of St. Barbe, Newfoundland
and Blanc Sablon, Quebec. The vessel has recently been operating with the
assistance of a tugboat, meaning it has been taking longer to perform its
crossings.
In order for the new engine to be installed, the ferry will be coming out of
service on June 19, after the morning crossing, and will return to service by
June 23.
"The goal is to have the engine repaired as quickly as possible and have the
vessel back in service before the major tourism season begins, with minimal
disruption to the people who depend on the service," said Minister Rideout.
In absence of the MV Apollo, an airlift service will be provided. A fixed-wing
aircraft will be providing an airlift service on a load-and-go basis between
Forteau and Sandy Cove. Tickets for this service can be purchased at the same
price as the cost of using the ferry. Further details regarding this air
service, including availability, will be made available through the contractor.
The revised service schedule and details regarding the fixed wing service can be
viewed on the contractors website, at
www.labradormarine.com.
"While the contractor and the department made every effort to secure another
vessel, unfortunately one could not be located," said the minister. "Our
government regrets any inconvenience this may cause to local residents and
businesses. We are cognizant of the vital link provided by this ferry service to
the northern peninsula and the southeast coast of Labrador.
"With this in mind, we have been in contact with the local ferry users committee
and MHA for the area. The areas ferry user committee supports this course of
action," said the minister.
Work will commence immediately following the temporary termination of this
service. All passengers who currently hold reservations have been or will be
contacted by the contractor. Any affected commercial vehicles have also been
contacted, and loads are currently being rescheduled. The contractor advises us
that tour operators are being contacted to make necessary alternative
arrangements.
Minister Rideout said: "Our government is committed to ensuring that the Apollo
will return to service as soon as possible. The Department of Transportation and
Works will continue to monitor the situation very closely."
