Cape St. Francis District
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, and Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and MHA for
Cape St. Francis, today announced road projects for the district.
Minister Rideout said: "In Budget 2005, government will be spending significant
monies on the provincial road network and I am pleased to announce an allocation
of $1.6 million in new funding for Cape St. Francis District under the 2005-06
Provincial Roads Improvement Program."
Planned work for the district includes:
- $430,000 for continued upgrading and paving
on Wind Gap Road in Flatrock
(plus $88,000 in funding carried over from last year);
- $320,000 for upgrading and paving a section
of Marine Drive;
- $300,000 for upgrading and paving a section
of Route 20 between Flatrock and Shoe Cove;

existing culverts across Wind Gap Road above Piccos Brook.
"This funding comes as welcome news to the
District of Cape St. Francis. I am delighted that government has shown its
commitment to enhancing the infrastructure and the safety of the roads. I am
particularly pleased with the amount of funding to be spent on the local roads
in this district this year. It is by far the most that has been spent over the
past number of years," said MHA Jack Byrne.
Minister Rideout said: "Road work creates employment opportunities, and an
improved transportation system will result in safer roads for users. Our
government recognizes the benefits for provincial road users of investing in the
maintenance of our highway infrastructure. The allocation in Budget 2005 for the
Provincial Roads Improvement Program is valued at $33.7 million this year,
including $3.7 million in carry overs.
"This demonstrates our commitment to safeguarding our roads infrastructure. It
is also indicative of our plan to revitalize our economy by investing in
government programs that will result in long-term benefits for all
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," said the minister.
