Minister announces shipping dates
for Labrador Marine Service
Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and
Works, today reminded the general public and communities of the shipping dates
for vessels that comprise the Labrador Marine Service.
"Government views the Labrador Marine Service as a fundamental piece of our
marine infrastructure that is important to the people of the province, our
businesses and the economy. The level of service provided last year was
efficient and reliable. Our government looks forward to continued success in
2005," said Minister Rideout.
The following dates will be applied for the shipment of freight on vessels that
comprise the Labrador Marine Service for the 2005 season. Freight destined for
Labrador will be accepted at all locations beginning on June 6. This includes
Cartwright, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Lewisporte. In addition, the MV Northern
Ranger will call into Black Tickle and Rigolet on route to Happy Valley-Goose
Bay to begin the schedule for 2005.
The 2005 operating season for the Labrador Marine Service will run through the
following dates:
MV Sir Robert Bond from June 10, 2005 to November 21, 2005
MV Northern Ranger from June 13, 2005 to November 21, 2005
MV Trans Gulf from June 13, 2005 to November 24, 2005
MV Challenge One from June 9, 2005 to November 30, 2005
The weekly schedule can be found at

Minister Rideout said: "Budget 2005 allocated significant monies for our marine
infrastructure. Included was an allocation of $2.97 million for refits to the MV
Sir Robert Bond and the MV Northern Ranger, both of which are part of the
Labrador Marine Service."
"The refit for the MV Sir Robert Bond allowed for government to make
improvements to the vessel. This included the addition of 42 seating and
overnight berthing accommodations. This represents an increase of 20 per cent
over and above what previously existed on the Bond," said the minister.
"This increase will help to address the high demand for accommodations on the
vessel.
"Our government believes that investment in our marine infrastructure will
result in long-term benefits for our people, province and economy. We will
continue to invest smartly and strategically in our marine infrastructure."
