Road work announced for Baie Verte district

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Paul Shelley, MHA for Baie Verte district, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and Minister responsible for Labrador Affairs, today announced road projects totaling over $3.37 million in new funding for the Baie Verte district. Funding for these projects is made available under the 2005-06 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Minister Rideout said, "The Provincial Roads Improvement Program provides funding for upgrades and improvements to the provincial highway network throughout the province. This is part of government�s commitment to providing a safe transportation network for road users."

Minister Shelley said he is pleased to announce the largest roads work budget in the Baie Verte district for years. "Our government clearly recognizes the need to make significant investment in road infrastructure in all areas of the province," said Minister Shelley.

"As the MHA for the Baie Verte District, I committed to my constituents that I would advocate strongly on their behalf for necessary funding to upgrade and pave sections of road throughout the district. This year�s investment of $3.37 million, combined with last year�s investment of $1.9 million, brings the total investment in two short years to over $5 million. This significant investment will result in road upgrades in 13 communities, providing benefit to residents and businesses in the district," said Minister Shelley.

Planned projects for Baie Verte District include:

  • $700,000 for upgrading and paving various section of Route 414, La Scie Highway (including $150,000 carried over from last year);
  • $450,000 for upgrading and paving of a section of Middle Arm Road;
  • $450,000 for paving of department roads in Little Bay Islands;
  • $300,000 for upgrading and paving of a section of Smith�s Harbour Road;
  • $300,000 for paving various sections of Kings Point Road;
  • $350,000 for resurfacing various sections of Fleur de Lys Road (including $50,000 carried over from last year);
  • $300,000 for resurfacing various sections of Little Bay Road;
  • $300,000 for paving a section of Woodstock-Pacquet Road;
  • $300,000 for paving a section of road in the community of Wild Cove (including $100,000 carried over from last year);
  • $150,000 for paving a section of road in the community of Shoe Cove;
  • $75,000 for stockpiling crushed grade at Harry�s Harbour, Nipper�s Harbour and Harbour Round;

"Budget 2005 allocated significant monies for our roads infrastructure," said Minister Rideout.
"Our government has and will continue to make strategic investments to improve our roads infrastructure, create economic growth and improve the quality of life for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."
