Five provincial boys volleyball championships this weekend

The final weekend of schools sports before Christmas gets underway starting Friday with five boys volleyball provincial tournaments. Twenty-six teams from Newfoundland and Labrador will compete for the championship banners.

The 2A and 3A tournaments are being hosted by Mealy Mountain Collegiate in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Island tournaments were held two weeks ago involving teams from all over the island, with the winners qualifying for this provincial in Labrador. The 2A tournament will feature competition between the island winner Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Peenamin McKenzie (Sheshatshit), Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls) and Amos Comenius Memorial (Hopedale). The tournament will be played in a round robin format starting 1 p.m. Friday. Semi-final action will go ahead Saturday morning with the top two teams meeting in the championship game at 1 o�clock, Saturday afternoon.

Three teams will compete for the 3A title including the host Mealy Mountain Collegiate, Menihek High (Labrador City) and the Island winner Baie Verte High. The 3A tournament gets underway at 2 p.m. Friday, and will be a double round robin format. The first place team receives a bye to the final with the other two teams playing the semi-final game at 12 noon. The 3A final will be played following the 2A final at 2 p.m.

Gander Collegiate will be the host school for the 4A Boys tournament. Ten teams will be competing in a two division round robin tournament attempting to qualify for semi-final play.

Division A will consist of Booth Memorial (St. John�s), Clarenville High, Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s) and the host, Gander Collegiate. Playing in Division B will be Carmanville School, Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Regina High (Corner Brook). Games will be played at both Gander Collegiate and St. Paul�s Intermediate gyms starting at 1 p.m. Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.on Saturday afternoon.

The Boys Fair Play Volleyball tournament is being hosted by Gill Memorial School in Musgrave Harbour and will feature three schools in a round robin format. The top team will receive a bye to the final while the other two teams compete in a semi-final games. The teams competing include the host, Gill Memorial, Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge) and St. Mark�s School (Kings Cove). The championship game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The inaugural Small Schools Boys Volleyball provincial features schools with a high school population of less than 40 students. Our Lady of Labrador in West St. Modeste is the host school. Six teams will compete in a round robin format to determine the provincial champion. Teams competing include the host, Our Lady of Labrador, Long Island Academy (Beaumont), Hampden Academy, Lake Melville School (North West River), J.C. Erhardt Memorial (Makkovik) and Mary Simms All Grade/St. Joseph�s (Main River/Croque).

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.
