Minister expresses condolences

Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, sends condolences today to the family of beloved musician Dick Nolan who died Monday at the age of 66. Mr. Nolan was a key figure in the rise of "Newfoundland country" - a style that combines country and western music with traditional Newfoundland themes.

"Dick Nolan paved the way for many local musicians and he will be greatly missed by all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," said Minister Hedderson. "I extend my deepest sympathy to the Nolan family during this difficult time."

Mr. Nolan released more than 40 albums during his career but was perhaps best known for the hit song Aunt Martha's Sheep. He was honoured last month with a lifetime achievement award by Music NL, the provincial music industry association.

Born and raised in Corner Brook, Mr. Nolan began performing as a teenager. In 1958, he moved to Toronto to work as a country singer and much of his career was spent entertaining homesick Newfoundlanders. Last summer, Mr. Nolan returned back to the province with his wife, Marie, to write his memoirs.
