Boys soccer and girls slow pitch this weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador continues its fall schedule this coming weekend as the girls take to the softball diamond and the boys to the soccer pitch.

Stephenville High School continues its hosting duties in preparing for the 4A Girls Slo Pitch. Four teams will compete in Stephenville for the championship and team sportsmanship banners. Competing in a round robin format will be Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Roncalli High (Avondale), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook) and Stephenville High. The tournament gets underway Friday morning and concludes with the championship game Saturday afternoon.

Burgeo Academy will be the host school for the eight team 3A Girls Slo Pitch tournament. The teams will play a round robin format in two divisions with the top two teams from each division moving on to the playoff round. Competing in Division A will be Roncalli High (Port Saunders), E.A. Butler High (McKays), St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline), and J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate). Action in Division B will be between Cape John Collegiate (LaScie), Stella Maris High (Trepassey), the host Burgeo Academy, and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista). Games get underway 9:00 on Friday morning and round robin play continues throughout Friday and into Saturday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday.

O�Donel High in Mount Pearl is the host school for the 4A Boys Soccer Provincials. Six teams will be battling for top spot in their respective divisions. Division A will see action from Gonzaga High (St. John�s), O�Donel High and Regina High (Corner Brook). In Division B, Mount Pearl Senior High, Marystown Central High and Carbonear Collegiate will face off. Games will be played Thursday at 3:30, Friday at 9:00 and 3:00 at both Central and Topsail Pitches. The cross overs are set for 9 a.m., Saturday followed by a 2 p.m. championship game.

The 3A Boys Soccer teams will be heading to Springdale, as Indian River High hosts the provincial in that sport. Division A will consist of Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), and Belanger Memorial (Doyles). Playing in Division B will be Mealy Mountain High (Goose Bay), Indian River High and Mobile High School.

The tournament gets underway Friday at 8:30 and round robin play continues throughout Friday. The playoff games go Saturday morning with the championship game set for 1:30 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, is sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.
