Girls Soccer and Boys Slo Pitch
this weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will
start off its provincial championships this weekend as four provincial titles
will be up for grabs.
Stephenville High School will play host to two of these tournament, the Girls 3A
Soccer and the Boys 4A Slo Pitch.
The 3A Girls Soccer will be a six team event featuring, Carbonear Collegiate,
St. Lawrence Academy, Gander Collegiate, Stephenville High, Menihek High
(Labrador City) and Indian River High (Springdale).
The tournament is set up in two divisions of three with the top two teams in
each division advancing to the championship round. Playing in A division will be
Carbonear Collegiate, Stephenville High and Indian River. Competing in the B
division will be St. Lawrence Academy, Menihek High and Gander Collegiate. Round
robin games will go at 10:00, 1:00 and 4:00 on Friday. Semi-finals will be
played Saturday morning at 9:00, followed by a fifth, sixth place game and the
championship game at 1:00 p.m.
Eight teams will be vying for the 4A Boys Slo Pitch Championship and Team
Sportsmanship Banners. Round robin games will be played Friday at 9:30 a.m., 11
a.m. 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Playing in the A division at
the Stephenville High Diamond will be Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Botwood
Collegiate, Stephenville High and Clarenville High. The B division will be
played at the Town Diamond C and will feature competition between Holy Trinity
High (Torbay), Laval High (Placentia), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony)
and Appalachia
High (St. Georges). The top two teams to emerge from each division will play in
cross over action Saturday morning at 10:00 and 11:30. The championship game is
scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Tricentia Academy in Arnold�s Cove is the host school for the 3A Boys Provincial
Slo Pitch. Eight teams will also be competing for top honours in this event.
Division A will include Long Range Academy (Cow Head), Burgeo Academy, Tricentia
Academy and Bay d�Espoir Academy. Playing in Division B will be J.M. Olds
Collegiate (Twillingate), Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), Cape John Collegiate
(LaScie) and Christ the King School (Rushoon). Games get underway Thursday at
3:30 and continue throughout Friday and into Saturday morning. The cross over
games will continue and the top two teams meeting in the championship game,
Saturday afternoon.
Gonzaga High School in St. John�s is the host school for the 4A Girls Soccer
Championships, featuring 6 teams. Teams include the host, Gonzaga, Holy Spirit
High (Manuels), Marystown Central High, O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Holy Heart
of Mary High (St. John�s) and Booth Memorial (St. John�s). Games get underway
Thursday and continue through to Friday afternoon at Jim Clarke Field, Peter
Duff Field and Fieldian Grounds. The top two teams meet in semi-finals at 9:00
Saturday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at
Jim Clarke Field.
In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland
and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the
Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to
receive an individual sportsmanship medal.
The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of
the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner.
