Gros
Morne
National
Park
named one
of top North American park destinations
Paul
Shelley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today congratulated Parks
Canada and, in particular, staff of the
Gros
Morne
National Park
, on the park being named one
of the top North American park destinations by National Geographic Traveller
Magazine.

Gros
Morne
National Park
is one of our provinces
treasures and is widely used in promoting our province as a unique and
compelling tourism destination, said Minister Shelley.
Having one of our national parks named to this list by such a
prestigious magazine bodes well for our provinces tourism industry, as
visitors within our demographic reach may be compelled to come to the province
to discover
Gros
Morne
National Park
themselves.
Residents as well should take pride in the fact that one of
North America
s top-rated parks is located right here in
Newfoundland
and
Labrador
.
Over 300
experts were consulted to review a list of 55
North America
park destinations, based on
sustainable tourism, destination quality and park management.
Parks were ranked based on a 1-to-100 scale, based on the experts
opinions. No destination ranked 90
or above.
Gros
Morne
National Park
was tied for second place in
the ranking, with a score of 78. The
magazine said the geological, scenic landscape of Gros Morne receives
praise and described the park as a model of the collaborative actions of
local communities and park management.
Gros
Morne National Park of Canada is located in
Rocky
Harbour
, on the provinces west
coast. The park was designated a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is an area of great natural beauty with a
rich variety of scenery, wildlife and recreational activities.
