Opening of Comharsana Beal Dorais (Next Door Neighbours)
exhibit from the Irish Museum of Modern Art

Paul Shelley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and Dr. Priscilla Renouf, chair of the board of directors for The Rooms Corporation, along with John O'Donoghue, TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism for Ireland, today unveiled the Comharsana Beal Dorais (Next Door Neighbours) exhibit at The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery Division. Comharsana Beal Dorais was organized by the Irish Museum of Modern Art and is curated by Catherine Marshall, senior curator, head of collections, International Museum of Modern Art. The exhibit is presented with support from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Ireland Newfoundland Partnership and the Government of the Republic of Ireland.

"We are delighted to host Minister ODonoghue and his delegation to Newfoundland and Labrador during a truly significant time in our history," said Minister Shelley. "Given the strong cultural ties that exist between both of our jurisdictions, we are pleased that Dublins Irish Museum of Modern Art has shared an exhibition with its neighbours in Newfoundland and Labrador. In July 2004, our government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the relationship with Ireland through the re-signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) so that we might strengthen ties in the areas of business, economic development and culture. The unveiling of this exhibit is just one example of how such a relationship provides mutual benefits for both jurisdictions."

Dr. Renouf added: "We are thrilled to welcome representatives of the Irish Museum of Modern Art to our province during such a momentous occasion. The enhanced opportunities that have become available because of the infrastructure of The Rooms with its moveable walls, state-of-the-art multi-media capabilities and enhanced gallery space is unending. We hope to unveil many more exhibits of this nature in the future."

Comharsana Beal Dorais (Next Door Neighbours) is an exhibition drawn from the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art. This is the second exhibition from the International Museum of Modern Art to travel to St. Johns. The first was Irish Art Now; From the Poetic to the Political in 1997.
