Basketball association inducts four to Hall of Fame

The Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association will induct four new members to its Hall of Fame on June 25, during their annual general meeting. The ceremony will take place at Holiday Inn in St. John's commencing at 12:30 p.m.. The four inductees include Karen Baggs (Athlete), Charlie Ennis (Athlete), Joe Wadden (Builder) and Bill Brophy (Builder).

Chairperson, Joe Lake is quite thrilled with this year�s selections and the work the committee has put into this year�s program. Mr. Lake stated, "This year�s group of inductees is what the sport of basketball is all about. These individuals have built the game of basketball in this province over the past 30-40 years and their time of recognition has arrived. These four individuals will join the other 28 inductees currently entered into the Hall of Fame."

Karen Baggs: (Athlete) Karen started her career at Morris Academy in Mount Pearl and went on to compete with Mount Pearl Senior High, prior to staring at Memorial University. She was quickly recognized as one of the top "natural" female athletes ever produced in Newfoundland. Some of Karen�s high lights included:

1972-75- Member of Morris Academy Junior High program
1977-79- MVP at Mount Pearl Senior High
1979-80- Member of the Newfoundland Canada Games team
1980-84- Competed for MUN in AUS league where she was captain of the team for three years and won a first team AUS all-star for three of her four years at the varsity level.
1980-1985- Won several provincial championships and was named MVP at various levels.
1985�present Coached and played in several leagues across the country including Plum Point, North West Territories and New Brunswick.

Charles Ennis: (Athlete) Charlie started his career with the famous Holy Cross Program at the Junior high level in 1954. He went on to play high school and university basketball before moving into the provincial senior men�s league. He not only won several championships over the course of his career, but was also instrumental in the shaping of the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association in 1964. Some of Charlie�s accomplishments include:

1959-1960- St. John�s High School City Champs
1961-1962- Member of Memorial�s Senior and Junior Varsity Programs
1962-1964- Member of championship teams in St. John�s Senior league
1966-2003- Competed and won championships in several leagues on the west coast including, Corner Brook and Baie Verte.

Charlie was also a member of the NLBA and served in various capacities for several years. He organized and established several leagues across the province including, the Central Newfoundland and Baie Verte senior leagues.

Joe Wadden: (Builder) Joe started his career 43 years ago and has officiated, played and coached during this remarkable span of time. He is currently still coaching and officiating today at the junior and senior high school levels. While Joe was a competitive athlete for 20 years at the high school, university and senior levels, an unfortunate injury ended his career. Joe turned to coaching full time and has done so for the past 30 years. Some of his achievements include:

1972-73- Coached Stella Maris of Trepassey to the provincial 4�a High School Championship.
1974-76 Coached MUN Womens� Program including at title at the Atlantic "B" Championships in NB
1975 Coached Newfoundland team that participated in the Canada Winter Games in Alberta.
1975-2004 Coached St. Kevin�s teams at junior and senior high levels. At one time he coached six teams in one season ranging from junior high to senior men�s.

William Brophy: (Builder) Bill started his career under the tutelage of the infamous Ed Browne, as manager of the men�s varsity program. He has been coaching or officiating for the past 38 years. Some of Bill�s coaching highlights include:

1967-1971 Manager of Men�s Varsity Program.
1971 Received MUN�s Athletic Honour Society Award for service to men�s sport.
1976-1979 Coached at Stella Maris winning banners at all levels.
1979 Coached Provincial Women�s Team at the Canada Games in Manitoba.
1981-2003 Coached Holy Spirit School programs. Won several banners and represented province at the Eastern Canadians U18 Championships.
2003 Awarded NLBA Achievement Award
2004 Presented with the Coaching Service Award from School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador.
1999-2005 Member of the Selection Committee for the NLBA�s Premier Elite Eight (Hall of Fame Cup) Championships.
