Chair of Board announced for 2006 Labrador Winter Games

Paul Shelley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and Minister responsible for Labrador Affairs, today announced the appointment of Dusty Miller as the chair of the 2006 Labrador Winter Games Committee. The 2006 Labrador Winter Games will take place in Happy Valley-Goose Bay in March. Government committed $500,000 in Budget 2005 to support the Labrador Winter Games.

"I am pleased today to announce the appointment of Dusty Miller as the chair of the Labrador Winter Games Committee. I am confident that he will lead a dynamic group of individuals on the committee who will work to ensure that the games are a great success," said Minister Shelley. "Government is committed to the Labrador Winter Games, and we recognize the games as an important event that both encourages the further development of sport and recreation in the region, while celebrating the unique culture of Labrador."

Dusty Miller, a resident of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, has volunteered at the community level for a number of years. From 1999 to 2004 he served in various capacities in the Lake Melville Minor Hockey Association, and for the last two years he has served on the executive of the Grand River Snowmobile Club. He also served for two years on the board of directors for the Goose Bay Airport Corporation. Mr. Miller is trained as an air traffic controller and served with the Canadian Forces for nine years until retiring in 1990 to work for Transport Canada. Having joined the Serco Goose Bay team in 1998 as standards and training officer, in March 2004 he was appointed as site manager.

John Hickey, MHA for the Lake Melville District, said: "Mr. Millers involvement with sports at the community level, his management experience at 5 Wing Goose Bay, and his connection with the people of Labrador, will help him lead the committee to prepare for the Labrador Winter Games."

Held every three years, the Labrador Winter Games began in 1983 as a way to promote the development of sport and recreation programs throughout the communities of Labrador; encourage, promote and enhance cooperation and understanding among all peoples of the region; and revive and encourage the development of sports and activities associated with the traditional lifestyles of the region.

Organized by the Labrador Winter Games Association and hosted by the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, the 2006 Labrador Winter Games will bring together approximately 450 athletes and involve approximately 1,000 volunteers from all communities of Labrador during a week-long competition. Many of the events, including snowshoeing, rifle shooting, dog sled racing and the seal crawl, are part of the Labrador culture. Government recognizes the unique opportunity presented by the games to mobilize Labrador as a community and to enhance the pride and culture of Labrador.
